Our eco-conscious local guides help you experience Kilimanjaro in a safe, respectful way that honors this ancient mountain.

6-Days Machame Route Itinerary
Arrival in Tanzania
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro or Arusha Airport, your private driver-guide will meet you and transfer you to your lodge for dinner and overnight. Later, your mountain guide will provide a full briefing and equipment check, ensuring you are ready for the climb.
Day 01
Arusha – Machame Gate (1,800m) – Machame Camp (2,850m)
Hiking: 5 hrs | Distance: 7 km | Habitat: Montane Forest
After breakfast, drive 90 minutes to Machame Gate for registration and lunch. Begin your trek through lush rainforest, often misty and muddy, with towering trees and rich birdlife. Porters will set camp ahead of you, preparing meals and tents. Nights here can be chilly, so keep warm at Machame Camp.
Day 02
Machame Camp – Shira Cave (3,750m)
Hiking: 5 hrs | Distance: 7 km | Habitat: Moorland
The trail climbs steeply out of the forest, transitioning into moorland with stunning views of Kibo Peak and the Western Breach glaciers. After a hot lunch en route, continue to Shira Cave for dinner and overnight. Expect colder temperatures than the previous night.
Day 03
Shira (3,750m) – Lava Tower (4,600m) – Barranco Camp (3,900m)
Hiking: 7 hrs | Distance: 11 km | Habitat: Semi-desert
Today is a key acclimatization day. Trek east across a rocky semi-desert to Lava Tower at 4,600m, where lunch is served. Many climbers feel the effects of altitude here. Afterward, descend nearly 700m to Barranco Camp, beautifully set below the Great Barranco Wall. Sunset views here are spectacular. Dinner and overnight at camp.
Day 04
Barranco Camp – Karanga Valley (3,995m) – Barafu Camp (4,667m)
Hiking: 8 hrs | Distance: 10 km | Habitat: Alpine Desert
After breakfast, scale the impressive Barranco Wall (with some scrambling sections but no technical climbing). Continue across ridges to Karanga Valley for lunch, then press on to Barafu Camp. From here, the South Circuit is complete, offering panoramic views of both Mawenzi and Kibo. Dinner and rest before the summit attempt.
Day 05
Summit Attempt – Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Camp (3,100m)
Hiking: 12–14 hrs | Distance: 14 km | Habitat: Scree, snow & forest
Wake at 11:00 PM for tea and biscuits before beginning the summit push. Ascend steep scree slopes to Stella Point (5,757m), the toughest section of the climb, reaching it at sunrise. From here, trek along the rim for about an hour to Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa. After celebrating briefly, descend to Barafu for a short rest before continuing to Mweka Camp for dinner and overnight.
Day 06
Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate (1,980m)
Hiking: 3 hrs | Distance: 10 km | Habitat: Forest
Enjoy breakfast before a gentle descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate. Here you’ll sign the register and receive your summit certificate—green for Stella Point or gold for Uhuru Peak. Celebrate with your crew before transferring to Moshi or Arusha for a hot shower, dinner, and overnight. If you have a flight, transfer directly to Kilimanjaro Airport for your onward flight.
